Best Bargain in Town

Each month, Echo provides the St. Louis community with free play readings by contemporary artists from around the globe. We give our audiences and our artists the opportunity to encounter bold and challenging new works that would rarely be produced or even heard of in the area.  In the past two years, we have introduced the works of playwrights from the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.  All of the selections embrace the messy, contradictory, funny, terrifying, joyful, sexy and beautiful aspects of living in the 21st century.  As an added bonus, the plays are brought to life by some of the city’s most accomplished professional actors in a relaxed atmosphere.

Play readings are currently on hiatus until futher notice.

“Kudos to all involved for providing this monthly reading series of new, lesser known plays. It's like having a very reduced Humana Festival once a month! I know I'll be back and I recommend others get there, too.”
-Sean, audience member

“I'd like to encourage everyone interested in adventurous, imaginative, and well-written theater to attend this reading and all of the readings in this monthly Echo Theatre Company reading series. All of the entries so far have been entertaining in the extreme and of serious intent; Echo Artistic Director Eric Little has a keen eye for challenging, off-the-beaten-track plays, but also unerring judgment of sound writing and meaningful content. It certainly doesn't hurt that some of the best actors in town are taking part. Not for the staid, conservative, easily-shocked, easily-offended, ideologically-rigid, passive, non-risk-taking sort of theater-goer. Very exciting for the rest of us.”

“Check out next month’s reading. It makes for a wonderfully entertaining and relaxing evening and you just never know who you may run into.”
-Laura, audience member
